Diagnostic tests
Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS)
Nerve conduction studies measure how quickly signals travel along nerves; electromyography evaluates the electrical activity of muscles.
What it is
Nerve conduction studies measure how quickly signals travel along nerves; electromyography evaluates the electrical activity of muscles. Together they help assess neuropathy, pinched nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome and muscle disorders.
How to prepare
Bathe and avoid lotions on the day of the test. Tell us if you take blood thinners or have a pacemaker. Wear loose clothing.
What to expect
Small electrical pulses are applied to nerves, and a thin needle electrode may be placed in selected muscles. You may feel brief tingling or discomfort. Testing usually takes 30–60 minutes.
